More set backs for David Lemieux (40-4) as Golden Boy Promotions announced the Canadian slugger has suffer a hand injury in training and has been pulled from his bout vs John Ryder (27-4) for the interim WBA super middleweight world title as the co-main event for Canelo-Jacobs.
Ryder, ranked #1 for the WBA is in line for a title shot after an impressive run of form knocking out Patrick Nielsen, Jamie Cox and Andre Sirotkin in succession. With Golden Boy confirming a details for a new co-main event are forth coming, it best the question: Who is available to slot in as chief support on a Canelo card? Here are 4 prime suspects:
- Erik Bazinyan (22-0) – The current NABA champion is ranked 11th by the WBA and is already affiliated with Golden Boy as he’s scheduled for their May 2nd show at the Las Vegas Hard Rock.
- Peter Quillin (34-1-1) – WBA #6 and just fought a round and a half vs Sadam Ali which was stopped early due to a cut sustained by Ali. Quillin could still be ready to step into the ring on short notice and is still looking for a path to a title shot.
- Chris Eubank Jr (28-2) – Ever the opportunity, Eubank is naturally small for 168 and is always in shape to take a fight on short notice. Ranked #2 just behind Ryder, this is also a great opportunity for him to share a stage with Canelo, a fight he’s been calling for.
- Dominic Wade (20-1) – The discount option if they don’t want to rush along Bazinyan has recently emerged to fight a couple of tunes ups since his post-GGG KO hiatus. He’s scheduled vs TBA on May 18th so we know he’s in camp.
