Punch Stats Comparison: Post Crawford-Porter

Just a quick entry to show the next data point after the Crawford-Porter title fight from Saturday night.

As expected, Shawn Porter’s output was down from his usual high activity levels but the extent is what’s surprising.  After averaging 52 punches per round thrown in his previous eight fights, Porter’s output dropped by nearly half with just 28.9 thrown on average. His average landed per round dropped significantly as well to just 7.9 – far below his recent low of 12 landed per round against Ugas.

By the numbers, it was just another day at the office for Terrence Crawford. While Porter landed less than “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas, that’s more down to respect and unwillingness to trade when Porter was fully fresh. As Saturday Night Boxing details in their tactical breakdown of the fight, Crawford opted not to stand and trade in the pocket for any significant time until Porter began to show signs of wear in the second half.

In the end, the high level view is that both fighters dropped their output when looking at the trend lines, but it happened for very different reasons. Shawn Porter had to work hard all night to find the target whereas Terrence Crawford took on the role of the matador and only brought out the sword when needed.
