Ruiz Shocks Joshua To Become New Heavyweight Champion

Andy Ruiz climbs up off the floor and upset the odds as well as the US debut for former WBA, IBF, WBO & IBO champion Anthony Joshua on Saturday.

Things started to script with AJ using his jab to neutralize the shorter, stubbier Ruiz to much effect. With Ruiz having to take more risks to get inside he walked onto a left which sent him down to the canvas. Not hurt badly, he rose back up where the two traded blows with Ruiz actually coming out on top. A counter to the champ’s temple took his legs away and from there it was the beginning of the end.

In the 7th Ruiz hit Joshua with a short left counter right on the chin followed by an overhand left that found the mark. The much touted fast hands went to work with precision and the lumbering Brit could not steady himself among the storm. Down again, looking slow and dazed, the referee waved off the contest as Joshua was in no position to defend himself.

It was a massive upset that will be talked about for years on par with Tyson-Douglas. And now after failing in his first attempt, Ruiz has become the first Mexican world heavyweight champion,
